JJ Abrams: ‘Benedict Cumberbatch is a genius’

JJ Abrams has opened up about the casting of Benedict Cumberbatch in Star Trek 2.

The Super 8 director revealed that he considers the Sherlock star to be a “genius”, insisting that Cumberbatch was just what he wanted for the follow-up to the 2009 film.

“We just were looking for someone with the most awesome name in history,” Abrams joked to Collider. “That was the casting call. We asked for someone with the most awesome name in history, ever, and Benedict Cumberbatch showed up, so we were like, ‘You’re cast!’

“He’s a genius,” Abrams continued. “Honestly, he’s just an incredible actor. If you’ve seen his work in Sherlock, he’s just got incredible skills.

“I just loved his work and thought that he was perfect for what we needed,” he added. “We were just very lucky.”

Abrams went on to reveal that the film will be converted into 3D after filming.

“It will be converted, for those who want to see it in 3D,” he said. “But, I wanted to match the look of the first one and shoot it anamorphically.”

The director added that the film will begin shooting on Thursday (January 12).

Cumberbatch recently said that he is “over the moon” to be starring in Star Trek 2. The actor will reportedly play a villain in the forthcoming movie.

Star Trek 2 opens in cinemas on May 17, 2013.

Benedict Cumberbatch, 35, was born in London and educated at Harrow. In 2004, his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in the BBC drama Hawking earned him a Bafta nomination, and he got another for Sherlock; next year he plays the lead in Parade’s End. On stage, he has appeared in Danny Boyle’s acclaimed production of Frankenstein, and his film parts include Starter For 10, Atonement, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Peter Jackson’s forthcoming The Hobbit. He stars in Steven Spielberg’s new film, War Horse.

Benedict Cumberbatch Joins Star Trek 2

Benedict Cumberbatch and Noel Clarke have been cast in the highly-anticipated ‘Star Trek’ sequel.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Noel Clarke have signed up to star in ‘Star Trek 2’.

The British stars are the latest in a number of new castings in the highly-anticipated sci-fi sequel – to be directed by J.J. Abrams – with Benedict set to take on the lead villain role initially planned for Benicio Del Toro.

It is still not known who that baddie will be, but Noel has been cast to be a family man who has a wife and a young daughter, Variety reports.

‘Sex and the City 2’ actress Alice Eve and Peter Weller are the other known additions to the cast of the sequel to the 2009 movie starring Chris Pine as Captain James T. Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Vulcan Commander Spock.

Benedict’s fame is on the rise – following his work on UK TV show ‘Sherlock’, he also took supporting roles in both ‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’ and ‘War Horse’, both of which are considered strong Oscar-contenders.

‘Star Trek 2’ – also starring Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin and Simon Pegg – is expected to begin shooting this month ahead of a release on May 17, 2013.

A Scandal in Belgravia – Screencaptures added, and reviews!

Screencaptures from the wonderful first episode of Sherlock – A Scandal In Belgravia have been added to the gallery – a super-stylish episode from the genius Steven Moffat. Over 1000 HD screencaptures have been added, as well as new promos and stills from forthcoming episode The Hound of the Baskervilles!

Once again – a huge thank you to Blogtor Who for the wonderful stills and promotional images!

Benedict Cumberbach did a wonderful job playing the obnoxious Holmes with just a tiny hint of sentiment, giving him more depth. It was nice that we got to see that Sherlock cares for his friends, from his public apology to Molly after humiliating her at a Christmas party to consoling Mrs Hudson after her harrowing attack and even throwing her assailant out of a window countless times. (What Culture)

Cumberbatch and Freeman are terrific as the odd couple and their friendship feels genuine. Even if nothing happened in the whole episode, the interaction between the pair of them would have been entertaining enough on its own. (The Independent)

Cumberbatch, meanwhile, deserves an entry of his own. He perfectly catches the point at which intellectual detachment turns towards cruelty. Sexy is a word that springs to mind. On that thought, let’s add the sequence where he told Miss Adler that she was attracted to him. She laughed. Sherlock explained that he knew it because he’d taken her pulse when she’d taken his hand. Her pupils had dilated, too. “The chemistry is incredibly simple,” he told her. (The Telegraph)

Benedict Cumberbatch, movies’ man of 2012?

Benedict Cumberbatch was practically a horse riding novice when he signed on for Steven Spielberg’s epic World War I drama War Horse.

“I’d had maybe three lessons when I was a kid,” says the fast-rising British actor, best known for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes in the BBC’s update of the crime classic.

“It’s one of those things – like tap dancing – that are considered useful for children.

“I was a very outward bound and very gregarious young boy and I think it was just another activity that could stop me from getting into trouble.”

In the splendidly-named Cumberbatch’s case, the plan wasn’t entirely successful.
